Abstract

Relationship Between Adiponectin, Interleukin-6 and Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha Levels and Body Mass Index Change in Obesity

Obesity considered being a low-grade inflammatory disease. the objective of this study was to examine the association between inflammatory markers (IM) including white blood cells (WBC) counts, adiponectin, Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor(TNF-?) and body mass index (BMI) in adult participants. In this cross-sectional study, 260 individuals (151 men and 109 women), age ?19 years, living in Isparta province were included the study. the serum levels of adiponectin, IL-6, TNF-? were determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. WBC count was determined by the automated hematology analyzer. Weight and height were determined, and BMI was calculated. Adults were classified into normal weight, overweight obese and morbidly obese groups by BMI based on World Health Organisation (WHO) criteria. Morbidly obese group showed the highest WBC, IL-6, TNF-? and lowest adiponectin levels. A linear augmentation in TNF-?, IL-6 and WBC levels were observed in association with obesity categorizes. Adiponectin exhibited an inverse correlation with BMI. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that increasing TNF-?, IL-6 and decreasing adiponectin levels were independently associated with higher BMI in adults. The present results support evidence that obesity represents an in?ammatory state. Decreased adiponectin levels are thought to play a central role in the development of obesity in humans. As the production of endogenous adiponectin is impaired as an effect of obesity and related pathologies, a practical therapeutic approach may be used pharmacological or dietary interventions to restore the capacity of adipose tissue in secreting adiponectin.
