Abstract


DETERMINING THE PERCEPTIONS OF GEOGRAPHY TEACHER CANDIDATES ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY

In the research, it was tried to determine the perceptions of the last grade students studying at the Department of Geography Education about "solar energy". For this purpose, a word association test, which is a qualitative method, was applied to 36 students studying at the Geography Education Department in the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic year. Teacher candidates were required to write 10 expressions about the key concept of "solar energy" and use these expressions in a sentence. The purpose of asking the students to use these expressions in sentences is to understand what they mean by using these expressions better. In the next step, the expressions, which teacher candidates wrote, were tabulated according to their semantic associations by using the content analysis method and then categories were created. While creating the categories, the content of the key concept and the relation of the expression concepts were taken into consideration. It has been observed that some of the expressions written in this context do not have any relationship with the key concept and this is a misconception. When the categories are examined, it is observed that the teacher candidates mostly stated such expressions as; solar panel, sustainable-renewable energy, solar field, solar battery, natural energy, environmentally friendly energy, sunshine duration, Equatorial Zone, sunny day, South-eastern Anatolia, light-warming, Mediterranean Region, advanced technology. The fact that these expressions were written at a high rate suggests that teacher candidates generally have a correct perception about the key concept. It is also seen that teacher candidates also include some expressions that are not directly related to key concepts such as vitamin D, tourism, healing, humidity, agriculture, environment, love, fire circle, gloom, boiling hot, desert, fire, humidity rate, typhoid, global wars. The fact that these expressions were written by students shows the result that teacher candidates have some misconceptions. As a result, it can be concluded that the teacher candidates have a true perception about the concept of "solar energy", but they also have some misconceptions.
