Abstract

Assessment of Health Tourism Potential in Karabakh Region: Mineral and Thermal Waters

Despite the high tourism potential in the country due to the war situation in Azerbaijan, it has been difficult to experience progress in tourism. Namely, the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan has been occupied by Armenia since the early 1990s. Despite this, there have been many international organizations and events for the development of the tourism sector in Azerbaijan in recent years. The Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, which was freed from occupation in the last spring of 2020, is also very rich in terms of tourism potential. In the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, the facilities where local and foreign tourists can relax, use holiday resources, hot springs and healing waters for treatment have been destroyed by Armenia. This region, which is the tourism richness of Azerbaijan, plans to build many modern facilities in the coming years. In the study, the tourism sector in which the Karabakh region has a great potential and health tourism, which is a branch of it, are discussed. The aim of this study is to investigate and evaluate the health tourism potential of Karabakh, especially the current situation of mineral waters (Istisu, Turssu, Shırlan, Minkent, Koturlu, etc.) in this region, and determine the reasons why local and foreign tourists prefer this place in the future. The importance of this research will be the planned development as a result of the demands and preferences of the consumers who will participate in health tourism in the Karabakh region. In the Karabakh region, the potential of mineral waters in terms of health tourism and its use and development conditions have been investigated.
