Abstract

Integration of Google Classroom Distance Education System and Investigation of Student Satisfaction Levels in Pandemic Process

This research was carried out to investigate the efficiency of Google Classroom (GC), one of the alternative cloud-based learning management systems used in distance education activities by some higher education institutions during the pandemic process. In this context; Integration of Google Classroom into higher education institution has been handled and the levels of satisfaction have been examined by observing the usage experiences of the students in the stages of realization of education and training activities. The study group of this research in the survey model consisted of 862 mixed students who have completed their higher education at Uşak University in the 2019-2020 Spring Semester. A satisfaction survey was prepared to measure the satisfaction levels of students in the distance education process, and the messages they conveyed from the GC environment in the pandemic process were analysed. According to the quantitative and qualitative data obtained from the students, it was determined that 91.4% of the students participating in the study had never received any distance education and had no experience in this regard. While 84.8% of students have devices that can access the system, 15.2% are students who do not have access devices and can access the system by borrowing the device from their acquaintances. When the satisfaction of students without devices is examined, it is concluded that their satisfaction is significantly low. While 87.7% of the students had fixed or mobile internet access, 12.3% had no internet access. Although 6GB additional internet package was given to all higher education students in the pandemic process, 50.2% of the students stated that they had an internet package quota problem. The satisfaction of students with Internet package quota problem is significantly lower than GC. It was observed that students were partially satisfied (X): 3.29) that the teaching was carried out in this way by transitioning to distance education during the pandemic process. In addition, these students were satisfied with the proficiency of the instructors who entered their classes through distance education (X¯: 3.54), and they wanted to continue their exams online (X¯: 3.27) and they were partially eager to continue distance education in the future (X¯: 3.01) can be expressed. In light of the qualitative data obtained from the students' messages, it has been found that the online exam section of the GC system should be reconsidered by Google developers. 7.44% of the students had problems with access to the examination system. Especially the rules and policies regarding GC exam access permits must be reviewed.
