Abstract


The Effect of Cornell Technique on Text Summarizing

Students are taught how to use strategies such as comprehension, analysis, selection and summarization to improve their ability to cope with complex and long texts in the schools. Students who learn to use text summarization techniques, both gain the ability to select important information in the texts and do not have a hard time studying exams related to school lessons and thus it may provide academic success. In this study, the effect of Cornell note taking technique on prospective Turkish teachers’ text summarizing skills was investigated. The research was designed according to action research. For the teaching of the summarization technique in writing education lessons, instead of the traditional summarizing activities, 1 text per week during a lesson; a total of six texts for 6 weeks were summarized using Cornell note-taking technique. 69 volunteer 3rd grade prospective Turkish teachers participated to the study conducted in the class. In order to evaluate the development of prospective teachers' text summarization skills, the summaries they made in the first and sixth weeks were compared, and the two experts scored them using the “Summary Texts Evaluation Scale”. In addition, prospective Turkish teachers' opinions about the implementations were taken. The data obtained shows that Cornell note taking technique significantly improves prospective teachers' text summarizing skills. In addition, they will use the Cornell technique in taking notes and summarizing text; reported that they found it more effective than other summarization techniques they have learned. Prospective teachers reported that Cornell technique is more fun for comprehending and analyzing the text, effective and easy to use summarization, effective and efficient for study; they also reported that summarization took a lot of time, depending on a Cornell note taking form restricted them and for according to them this technique could not be used for every text types.
